Dear Dr. Cabeen,
Even when I’m away from work, I find myself thinking about school. How do I stop carrying work into time with my family?
Dear Present but Not Present,
Have you ever been sitting at dinner with your family while mentally writing tomorrow’s email? Or taking a walk while replaying a difficult conversation? Or watching a game, concert, or family event while thinking about a problem you’ll need to solve next week? Physically present. Mentally somewhere else. Many leaders know this feeling. Because leadership doesn’t always stay at work. The challenges, decisions, and responsibilities have a way of following us home.
The problem isn’t that we care. The problem is that caring can become carrying.
The Drip Effect
And eventually, carrying everything becomes exhausting.
I’ll be honest. Some of my biggest leadership insights haven’t happened at my desk. They’ve happened on walks. During conversations with my family. Watching my sons compete in swimming, football, soccer, and track. Sitting quietly with a cup of coffee. Moments that would have been missed if my attention had remained somewhere else. Presence is not about eliminating every thought about work. It’s about noticing when work is stealing a moment that deserves your attention.
That’s why The Drip Effect begins with Pause.
Pause long enough to ask:
- Where am I right now?
- And where is my attention?
Because leadership isn’t only about showing up for the people at work. It’s also about showing up for the people who matter most outside of it.
Your Next Drip
Choose one activity this week and make it a no-work zone.
- A family dinner.
- A walk.
- A ballgame.
- Coffee on the deck.
When thoughts about work appear—and they will—simply notice them and return your attention to the moment in front of you.
Presence isn’t built through perfection. It’s built through practice. One moment at a time.
Small Actions. Steady Pace. Lasting Impact.
