The Gift of Presence This Holiday Break

For many of us, the day after the last bell before winter break feels like a hard stop. It’s as if we’ve been speeding down life’s highway, going 77 MPH (ok, maybe 70), only to slam on the brakes—leaving us unsure what to do next.

This past week, my days were packed: classrooms, meetings, newsletters, registration prep for 2025-26, summer school planning, and celebrating our students’ credit attainment milestones. Nights were a whirlwind of basketball supervision, travel for medical appointments, hosting a Preparing to Pause masterclass (how ironic), and finishing a 24-page doctoral paper.

And now, it’s Saturday.

The Out of Office is officially on, but the blank space in my calendar feels unfamiliar, even a little unsettling. If you’re like me, the urge to fill the silence with just one more thing is strong.

But as I’ve learned (and teach in Master Class for Leaders):

“To show up as our best selves for others, we must first prioritize taking care of ourselves.”

Here are 3 ways to be present this break—and take care of YOU:

1. Set a Goal

High-achieving leaders love a challenge. Use 20 minutes to identify 2-3 things you’d love to do just for you—read a book, declutter a space, reconnect with a friend. These “sprint goals” are for your soul, not your to-do list.

2. Schedule It

Yes, even during a break, your calendar is your ally. Block time for your goals, or they’ll get lost in Netflix binges, social scrolling, or the “just one email” trap. Need a tool? Check out the Master Schedule Course template.

3. Reflect

Grab a notebook, a playlist, and 20 minutes to consider:

  • What did I accomplish in 2024?
  • How did I grow relationships and achieve goals?
  • Who made a difference in my work/life, and how can I thank them?

Reflection builds a foundation for 2025—and yes, I’ll share tips on preparing for the new year next week!

A Gentle Reminder

You’ve worked hard to serve others all year. Use this time to course correct and care for yourself. Consider this your hall pass to rest, recharge, and rediscover what fills your cup.

Enjoy your break—you’ve earned it.

I’m here if you need anything.
