Renewed Goals for the New Year
Happy New Year… almost!
There’s something magical about the days leading up to New Year’s Eve. It’s a rare window of calm—a chance to breathe, take a break from the busyness of school, and recalibrate. This pause offers the perfect opportunity to reflect on the year behind you and reset your focus for what’s ahead.
But here’s the catch: setting New Year’s goals is easy; sustaining them is the real challenge. If you find it difficult to set and stick to goals in both work and life, here are a few actionable strategies to help you create meaningful goals and keep them front and center all year long.
1. Reflect Before You Reset
Before you start setting goals, take a moment to look back.
- What worked well this year? Celebrate your wins, no matter how small.
- What didn’t work? Identify habits, routines, or projects that didn’t serve you.
- What lessons did you learn? Growth often hides in the challenges we face.
Journaling or a quick “year in review” can provide clarity and help you avoid repeating patterns that don’t align with your priorities.
2. Pick a Word or Theme
Instead of a long list of resolutions, choose one word or phrase to anchor your goals.
Examples:
- Balance: Focus on maintaining equilibrium between work and personal life.
- Courage: Step outside your comfort zone in leadership and life.
- Simplify: Reduce clutter—physical, digital, and mental—to make space for what matters.
Let this word guide your decisions throughout the year.
3. Start with Small Wins
Big goals can feel overwhelming. Instead, break them into smaller, actionable steps.
For example:
- If you aim to improve self-care, start with a daily 10-minute walk.
- If you want to improve communication at work, set a goal to send one positive note to a staff member each week.
Momentum builds confidence.
4. Block Time for What Matters
The key to achieving goals is making room for them in your schedule. Time-blocking is a powerful tool to ensure your priorities don’t get pushed aside.
- Dedicate blocks of time for your goals, whether it’s professional development, family activities, or personal wellness.
- Treat these blocks like unmissable appointments.
This has been a game-changing strategy, navigating a full time job, a senior in high school, and coursework for my doctoral program.
5. Share Your Goals
Accountability can make a world of difference. Share your goals with a trusted friend, colleague, or mentor.
You might even consider creating a group for mutual support. Knowing someone is cheering you on—or checking in—can help you stay on track.

6. Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection
Remember, it’s not about getting everything right. Growth comes from consistency, not perfection.
Celebrate the little wins along the way. Did you stick to your time-blocks this week? Make it home in time for family dinner? Finally finish that book you’ve been meaning to read? These moments aren’t just small—they’re the building blocks of a meaningful, balanced life.
Celebrate them. They matter.
